"Victorian Style" house architecture remains readily recognized and
appreciated from its American hey-day more than a century ago. There are many
variants of style, associated with refinements from its European roots,
culminating with the Queen Anne design. This style features steeply pitched
roofs, combining gables, hips, conical or bell-roof towers and sharply angled
bay windows or octogonal walls. The facade is typically asymmetrical with a
partial or full-width porch above which highly ornamented upper strories emerge.
Detailing includes spindle-work at the porch frieze, arched column brackets and
patterned shingle walls. Plan variations of many of the houses shown on this page are available from in-house resources at G.M. Frech and Associates.
