“Florida” house architecture is designed for its coastal
environment, styled from reflections of Spanish Revival and Mediterranean
traditions. Current expressions of this style remain largely one-story
dwellings, with low-pitched roofs, pastel-colored stucco exterior walls, tile
roofs and round shapes at selected openings for windows and principle doors.
Facades are likely to be asymmetrical and frequently include a covered porch
entry with adjoining courtyard and extensive rear patio. Floor plans usually
divide the Master suite from the other bedrooms on opposite wings of the home.
Caribbean versions of the same style provide ingenious roof configurations to
collect rainwater into storage cisterns under the house.
Plan variations of many of the houses shown on this page are available from in-house resources at G.M. Frech and Associates.
